Book Covers
The Playbill for the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, H.M.S. Pinafore, (#58) was my first “cover” design, at age 13. I sang the part of “Little Buttercup” in the Claverack, NY, Grade School production. I’ve been designing posters and book covers ever since.
Marrying Robert Cummings Neville, a prolific writer of 30 books on philosophy and theology, has given me the opportunity to design 18 of his book covers. (My designs, #01-27.) The remaining covers employ my artwork (#40, 46, 47, 48, 49) but were produced by other designers, with better or worse results! Covers #50 and 51 are early works. God the Creator, 2nd Edition, is illustrated with pen/ink portraits of philosophers mentioned in the book, (# 15-20.) The black and white photomontages (#28-39) that I made to illustrate Cosmology of Freedom were never published, for various reasons. For an explanation of their symbolism see my web-site section, “Photomontages.” Illustrations for The God Who Beckons, (#41-45) were drawn in the Claremont School of Theology “Biblical Garden.”
The cover of my Smith College 25th Reunion Yearbook, (# 52,) features an Ivy Chain surrounding an apple tree. It is illustrated with ink drawings, (#54, 55, 56) employing apple farm imagery. For years Smith College publication designers used my “Ivy Chain” on their brochures. I was flattered they used it but would have preferred some recognition!
